Stress vs. Growth: Training Your Nervous System to Choose Differently
Oct 03, 2025
Stress has a bad reputation. We hear it all the time: “I’m so stressed.” “Stress is killing me.”
And while chronic stress can absolutely take a toll, not all stress is bad.
In fact, your nervous system was designed to rise to challenges. The difference lies in whether you’re caught in chronic stress cycles or leaning into growth stress—the kind that stretches you, but doesn’t break you.
Two Kinds of Stress
π₯ Chronic Stress
- Feels like there’s no end in sight
- Keeps your body in fight, flight, or freeze
- Leads to exhaustion, tension, and burnout
π± Growth Stress
- Comes with a beginning, middle, and end
- Pushes you slightly outside your comfort zone
- Builds resilience, capacity, and confidence
Think of it this way: lifting weights is a form of “stress.” If you lift with rest and recovery, your muscles grow stronger. But if you keep lifting without pause, injury follows. Your nervous system works the same way.
A Practice to Shift Stress into Growth
The next time you feel stress rising, pause and ask yourself:
β¨ “Is this stretching me… or breaking me?”
- If it’s stretching: take a grounding breath, name the challenge, and move forward with intention.
- If it feels like breaking: step back, use a micro-moment (like the 3-Point Reset), and give your system space to recover.
This small check-in helps you shift from automatic reaction → intentional growth.
Why This Matters
When you train your nervous system to notice the difference between harmful stress and helpful stress, you start to:
βοΈ Build resilience instead of burnout
βοΈ Meet challenges with clarity and steadiness
βοΈ Grow without losing your foundation
